Whenever My Husband Craves This Dish, I Happily Make It — I Call It “Hubby’s Bliss”

There’s something special about those recipes that bring comfort, warmth, and pure satisfaction to the table. In our home, this dish — tender beef simmered in a rich tomato and mushroom sauce — has earned the nickname “Hubby’s Bliss.”

Every time my husband catches the scent of it bubbling away in the kitchen, his face lights up. It’s hearty, savory, and full of love — the kind of meal that brings everyone to the table before you even have to call them. Here’s how to make this classic Savory Smothered Steak in Tomato Gravy, a dish guaranteed to make hearts (and stomachs) happy.

 Ingredients

  • 1½ to 2 pounds of round steak or cube steak
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (red or green), sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional for extra depth)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

‍ Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat
Trim any excess fat from the steak and pat it dry with paper towels. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper, then lightly coat in flour. This helps the steak brown nicely and thickens the sauce later.
  2. Brown the Steak
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak pieces and sear them on both sides until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes per side. Remove the meat and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Veggies
In the same skillet, add onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until softened. Add garlic and cook for another minute, just until fragrant.
  4. Build the Sauce
Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and smoked paprika. Stir well, then slowly add the beef broth. Bring everything to a gentle simmer.
  5. Return the Steak
Nestle the browned steak pieces back into the sauce, ensuring they’re fully coated. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 1½ to 2 hours, or until the steak becomes tender enough to cut with a fork.
  6. Taste and Adjust
Before serving, taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
