What looked like a strange brown foam attached to a fence post turned out to be something far more interesting than most people expect. Praying mantises are among the most beneficial insects found in gardens. They are skilled hunters that feed on flies, caterpillars, aphids, crickets, and other insects that can damage plants. Because of their natural pest-control abilities, many gardeners are pleased to discover mantis egg cases on their property.

The egg case itself is usually tan or brown, with a rough, foamy texture and an elongated shape. It is commonly attached to fence posts, branches, shrubs, and other sturdy surfaces. Although it may appear unusual, it is completely harmless to people and pets.

When spring temperatures become consistently warm, the eggs hatch and dozens or even hundreds of tiny mantises emerge. These miniature predators quickly disperse into nearby vegetation, where they begin hunting small insects and growing into adults.
