Grandma Takes Me

Tuesday morning light filtered through the blinds as David Harper prepared breakfast for his daughter, Lily. Normally full of chatter, she sat quietly, pushing food around her plate. When she softly asked if he really had to leave for Chicago, something in her voice unsettled him. Kneeling beside her, he pressed gently until she whispered a secret that made his blood run cold—when he was away, her grandmother took her somewhere she wasn’t allowed to talk about.

Lily described a tall house with a blue door where other children were brought. Her voice trembled as she mentioned photos, strange clothes, and being told to smile. David held her as she cried, his mind racing through the worst possibilities. He canceled his trip immediately and called his wife, Sarah, urging her to come home without alerting her mother. When Sarah heard the recording, her shock turned into focus—they needed proof before going to authorities.

They staged a plan. David would pretend to leave for his trip while secretly returning to follow Evelyn. The next morning unfolded like a performance. After a convincing goodbye, David circled back and waited nearby. At exactly nine, Evelyn arrived and took Lily, dressed in unfamiliar clothes, into her car. David followed at a distance, heart pounding with every turn.

They eventually stopped at a neglected house hidden behind overgrown shrubs. The front door was bright blue. From afar, David watched as Evelyn led Lily inside. As the door opened, someone stepped forward from the shadows—and in that moment, everything changed.
