After finding the injured dogs abandoned beside a quiet rural road, our family brought them home and rushed them to a veterinarian. Although the dogs survived, the doctor explained that their back legs would never recover completely. Most people reacted with sadness and sympathy, but Ethan immediately focused on helping them live normal lives again. By the following morning, our backyard had turned into a small workshop filled with bicycle tires, stroller wheels, plastic tubing, and scattered tools. For two weeks, Ethan dedicated nearly every free moment to carefully designing and building custom wheelchairs for each dog.
When the wheelchairs were finally finished, the change in the dogs was incredible. At first, they moved awkwardly and cautiously across the yard, unsure of how to balance. Within minutes, however, they were racing through the grass with excitement and energy. Ethan laughed louder than he had in months while watching them rediscover their freedom. Their happiness completely changed the mood in our home and gave everyone a renewed sense of hope.
Unfortunately, not everyone appreciated Ethan’s efforts. Our neighbor Melinda complained constantly about the noise, the shelter, and even the appearance of the wheelchairs. She repeatedly claimed that the dogs were lowering property values in the neighborhood. We tried to avoid conflict by repainting the shelter, reinforcing the fence, and keeping the yard clean and quiet, but her anger only seemed to increase over time.
One rainy morning, Ethan screamed from outside. I ran into the yard and found the shelter destroyed, wood scattered across the mud, and the fence broken open. The terrified dogs huddled together in the corner while Melinda silently watched from her deck. Although the police could do little without evidence, the next day a neighborhood association member named Jonathan arrived to inspect the damage. Two days later, security footage provided by Mister Alvarez clearly showed Melinda deliberately cutting the fence and destroying the shelter piece by piece.
