Bear Caesar is finally free after having spent years locked in a torture vest

Keeping wild animals captive for entertainment is already heartbreaking — but forcing them to endure torture takes cruelty to another level.

Bear Caesar’s early life was marked by suffering. She was imprisoned on a bile farm in China, where bears are exploited for ingredients used in traditional medicine.

Day after day, Caesar was forced to endure a painful and invasive procedure. Farmers extracted bile from her gallbladder, a practice known for its extreme cruelty and lasting harm to the animals.

To make matters worse, she was bound in a heavy, restrictive metal vest designed to keep her still while the bile was drained. The vest made even the smallest movements agonizing and ensured her suffering continued without relief.

Her world was confined to a tiny, bleak room. There was no space to play, explore, or feel the sun — only walls that reinforced her captivity. For years, her life consisted of pain, confinement, and fear.

Animal welfare advocates describe this treatment as nothing short of torture. Bears on bile farms are denied everything natural to them: freedom, comfort, and the chance to live with dignity.

Stories like Caesar’s highlight the ongoing battle to end bile farming and protect animals from exploitation. Rescue groups are working tirelessly to close these farms, rehabilitate survivors, and push for stricter protections.

Though her early life was tragic, Caesar’s story can inspire change. By raising awareness and supporting efforts to end such practices, there is hope that future bears will never endure the suffering she faced.
