Acting IRS Chief Resigns After Refusing to Comply With Illegal Immigrant-Sharing Deal

The acting head of the Internal Revenue Service, Melanie Krause, plans to step down after disagreeing with a decision to share tax data on illegal immigrants with federal law enforcement, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday.

Krause becomes the third IRS leader to leave this year, amid growing tensions over political influences within the agency.

On Monday, the IRS and the Department of Homeland Security finalized an agreement allowing taxpayer data to be shared with immigration authorities to aid in locating undocumented immigrants. Krause reportedly opposed the decision and was sidelined by the Treasury Department, which pushed for the agreement despite concerns over federal privacy laws.

Krause’s resignation follows a similar departure by her predecessor, Doug O’Donnell, who also opposed data-sharing agreements.
