Why I Recently Invested $6,500 in a Registered Black Angus Bull

Earlier this year, I spent $6,500 on a registered Black Angus bull for my small cattle operation, expecting he would strengthen my herd and prove worth the investment. But within weeks, he seemed more interested in peacefully grazing than fulfilling the role I bought him for. While the rest of the cattle went about their routines, he wandered calmly, almost too content.

After days of watching him, I began to wonder if I had made a costly mistake. His gentle temperament was a blessing, but his lack of initiative left me unsure.

Unsure what to do next, I decided to call the local veterinarian for guidance. When he arrived, he examined the bull thoroughly and assured me that nothing was wrong. The bull was strong, healthy, and well-developed—just a bit younger and slower to mature than expected. With a confident smile, the vet handed me a small set of supplements and explained that daily vitamins and minerals would boost his energy and support development.

To my surprise, the results were immediate. Within two days of starting the supplements, the bull became noticeably more active and engaged. His energy rose, and he began confidently mingling with the herd, finally taking on the purpose he was meant for. Relief washed over me as I realized the investment hadn’t been a mistake after all.

But the true surprise came shortly after. Feeling energized, the bull pushed through a weak section of the fence and wandered onto my neighbor’s property as if their herd were his too. Thankfully, my neighbor found it amusing, and we shared a laugh as we repaired the fence. Standing there, I reflected on how quickly everything had shifted—from doubt and frustration to unexpected success. Farming has a way of teaching patience, and this bull reminded me that with the right care, uncertainty can turn into exactly what you hoped for.
