Simple and Affordable Ways to Clean Jewelry at Home

Keeping jewelry clean and shiny doesn’t have to involve expensive cleaners or professional polishing. Over time, everyday exposure to air, moisture, and lotions can leave favorite pieces looking dull or darkened. Even well-cared-for jewelry naturally loses its sparkle. The good news is that restoring shine can be simple, affordable, and done right at home with a little patience.

One effective DIY method uses three common ingredients: salt, baking soda, and liquid dish soap. Start by heating one cup of water until very hot but not boiling. Add one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of baking soda, and one tablespoon of dish soap, stirring until fully dissolved. Line a small bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up.

Carefully pour the solution into the bowl, then place your tarnished jewelry inside. Make sure each piece is fully submerged and touching the foil. This contact is important, as it helps trigger a gentle reaction that lifts tarnish from the metal’s surface.

Let the jewelry soak for five to ten minutes. During this time, you may notice the metal beginning to brighten on its own. No harsh scrubbing is needed, making this method suitable for delicate items and routine cleaning.

Once finished, remove the jewelry, rinse thoroughly with cool water, and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. This simple process works well for sterling silver, gold-filled pieces, brass, and similar metals—proof that keeping jewelry beautiful doesn’t have to be complicated or costly.
