Princess Di’s bra-less in revenge dress at 1996 Met Gala, felt ‘liberated’ after divorce

Just months after her divorce from King Charles III, Princess Diana made a bold appearance at the 1996 Met Gala, stunning the world with her daring “revenge” dress. The silk navy-blue slip dress, designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior, resembled lingerie and symbolized Diana’s newfound freedom. Fashion editor Hilary Alexander described the dress as “sensual rather than overtly sexy,” while Eloise Moran called it a “revenge look,” reflecting Diana’s transition from royal figure to global icon.

This daring look was a departure from Diana’s typical royal attire, signaling her liberation from the constraints of royal life. Diana completed the outfit with sapphire earrings and a choker necklace made from a sapphire brooch gifted by the Queen Mother.

Though not universally praised, with fashion critic Brenda Polan calling it more “Oh! Couture” than haute couture, the look captivated the public. It wasn’t the first time Diana made a statement through fashion. In 1994, she wore a bold black dress after Charles admitted to his affair with Camilla.

Diana’s Met Gala appearance cemented her status as a symbol of independence and confidence, showing the world that she was no longer bound by royal protocols.
