ON THE BEACH, I NOTICED A 70-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WEARING A VERY REVEALING SWIMSUIT, AND I DECIDED TO MAKE A REMARK TO HER.

The woman on the shoreline never raised her voice, never argued, never defended herself. She simply laughed and walked on, as if my opinion were a seashell the tide would carry away. In that small, wordless dismissal, I felt the weight of my own assumptions. I had dressed my discomfort as concern, my upbringing as universal truth. Her confidence made my certainty look fragile.

As the waves rolled in and erased our footprints, I understood that age does not require shrinking, softening, or disappearing. The rules I’d inherited were not laws of nature, just habits of a different time. She chose visibility; I had chosen safety. Standing there, I realized I no longer wanted to police other women to feel comfortable with myself. Dignity, I finally saw, is not in the length of a swimsuit, but in allowing every body, at every age, to simply be.
