MY SON CONDEMNED ME FOR GOING ON DATES AT 79.

At 79, after over a decade of mourning my husband, I decided to embrace dating once more. The loneliness had been overwhelming, and I felt ready to seek companionship again. However, when my son discovered my decision, he was infuriated. He said, “Mom, what are you thinking? At your age, you should be focusing on family, not pursuing new relationships. It’s disrespectful to Dad’s memory and embarrassing.”

His words were deeply hurtful. He went on to say, “You’re too old for dating. It’s undignified and makes you seem desperate. How can you even consider replacing Dad? It’s disgraceful.”

Now, I’m grappling with self-doubt, questioning if I should halt my pursuit of happiness to honor his disapproval and my late husband’s memory. I’m torn between my son’s harsh criticism and my own desire for companionship.

Has anyone faced similar judgments from loved ones about finding love later in life? How did you handle it? Should I prioritize my son’s feelings or follow my heart and seek the happiness I’ve been missing?
