My Son, 6, Was Left with My MIL for a Week

I trusted my mother-in-law, Angela, to care for my son Liam while my husband Ethan and I went on our honeymoon. But just four days into the trip, I received a panicked call from Liam, whispering that Angela had told him I was going to give him up for adoption. My heart dropped, and I immediately rushed home. Liam and I had been a team since his father left before he was born. I worked multiple jobs to support us, and though it was tough, Liam’s love made everything worth it. Then, I met Ethan, who loved Liam like his own. We got married, and he planned a honeymoon. Though I was nervous about leaving Liam, I trusted Angela, who seemed sweet enough. But when I heard Liam’s terrified voice on the phone, everything changed. Angela had scared him into thinking I would abandon him if he didn’t behave. Furious, I packed up and left the honeymoon early. When I arrived at Angela’s house, I found Liam locked in his room, shaking and holding onto his stuffed bunny. He cried, begging me not to leave him. Angela had no remorse, claiming fear was a necessary lesson for kids. But I couldn’t stand it. I demanded an explanation, and when Ethan arrived, he confronted his mother, telling her that if she thought fear was acceptable parenting, then she should experience it too. We left immediately, and for weeks, Angela begged for forgiveness. Eventually, we agreed to let her see Liam on the condition that she would never be alone with him again. Things were never the same, though. Liam became anxious and afraid whenever I left his side, but I promised him no one would ever hurt him again.Years later, as I tucked Liam into bed, he hugged me tightly and whispered, “You never left me. You kept your promise.” And that was enough for me.
