My MIL Said My Daughter Was Not Really Family and Tried

My daughter Lily, from my first marriage, was never accepted by my mother-in-law, Helena. She called Lily a “burden” and insisted she wasn’t real family. Marcus, my second husband, adored Lily and defended her, but Helena’s coldness was constant. When a work trip left us with no childcare, we reluctantly left Lily with Helena. I had a bad feeling, but we had no other options.

During the trip, Helena dodged our calls and refused to let us speak to Lily. When we returned, she told us she’d sent Lily away—to a tennis academy—claiming she was giving us a “fresh start” without her.

She said Lily wasn’t really Marcus’s child. We were horrified. We searched all night and found Lily the next morning, scared and heartbroken, clutching her stuffed bunny. She thought we had abandoned her. We brought her home and cut Helena out of our lives.

When I later told Helena I was pregnant, she lit up—until Marcus said, “You won’t meet this one either.” Lily is our daughter. Always was. And now, we choose love—not blood—and never look back.
