My Daughter and I Have a ‘Code Word’ – What Happened Yesterday Is Why You Should Have One with Your Loved Ones Too

Last weekend, my daughter Amy used our code word, “blueberries,” which I had taught her as a safety measure. This simple word, meant for emergencies, alerted me she needed help.

While talking to my ex-husband Dave, Amy’s use of the code word raised my alarm. “I wish I had a blue marker so I could draw blueberries,” she said, indicating she felt unsafe. I immediately planned to pick her up.

Upon arrival, I was met by Dave’s girlfriend, Lisa, who was unwelcoming. After a tense conversation, I took Amy, who revealed Lisa had been unkind when Dave wasn’t around. “She says I’m annoying and should stay in my room,” Amy cried.

I contacted Dave, who was shocked and promised to address the issue. This incident underscored the importance of having a code word for emergencies, a practice I now strongly advocate for other parents.
