MIL Stole a Key from My Office to Destroy My Law Career — I Made Her Regret It

When my mother-in-law snooped through my confidential case files, she shattered my trust and threatened my legal career. Now, as I confront the fallout, I’m faced with an impossible choice that could tear my family apart.

I was sweating bullets as I stared at my mother-in-law across the table. The bustling restaurant faded as I processed what she had just asked. How did she know about the Johnsons’ embryos? I hadn’t told her anything about that sensitive case.

Daphne sipped her iced tea casually. “I was just tidying up your office while you were in the shower. You left some papers out.” My blood ran cold. I definitely hadn’t left anything out. My files were always locked away.

She leaned in, eyes gleaming with excitement. “Mr. Johnson wants to destroy the embryos, but Mrs. Johnson wants to keep them. Such a shame, really.” I slammed my hand on the table. “You had no right to look at those files!” I hissed. “I could lose my license over this!”

The drive home was a blur of anger and panic. Daphne admitted she “borrowed” a key from my husband’s desk. “Pack your bags. You’re leaving,” I ordered. She protested, but I booked her an Uber to the airport. My husband, when he returned, was torn between us. “She stole a key to my office! There’s nothing innocent about that,” I argued.

The next day, Daphne called, apologizing tearfully. “I never meant to cause trouble. I thought if I knew more about your cases, I could help.” I told her, “You need to understand that what you did was serious. It’s about respect and trust.”

After hanging up, I felt a mix of relief and lingering anger. What would you have done?
