I stumbled upon the secret that my mom had been working as a taxi driver, and her explanation brought me to tears

I always thought I knew everything about my mom, but that changed the night I unknowingly hopped into a taxi she was driving. At 65, I was shocked to find her behind the wheel, something I never expected.

It all started on a regular evening when I shared a cab with my coworker. The taxi smelled faintly of lavender, and I felt an odd familiarity. Then, I saw her eyes in the rearview mirror—my mom. “Mom?” I gasped. It turned out she’d been driving a taxi for months without telling me. When I pressed her, she revealed the truth: she was learning to drive to take my terminally ill niece, Lily, on a road trip. Lily wanted to see the world, and my mom was doing everything she could to make it happen, even if it meant driving a taxi at her age.

After hearing this, I knew I couldn’t let her do it alone. My sister and I arranged a road trip to make Lily’s dream come true. We traveled to the ocean, the Grand Canyon, and the mountains, giving Lily memories she cherished. The trip was everything she wanted, and for a while, it brought her joy.

When Lily passed, I knew my mom was a hero—one who didn’t need a cape, just the courage and love to do whatever it took for her family.
