“I PRETENDED TO BE ‘DEAD’ TO TEST THE LOYALTY OF MY SHY HOUSEHELP — BUT WHAT I DISCOVERED… WAS DEEPER THAN MY HEART COULD HANDLE.”

For a moment, Sophie froze as if the air had been ripped from the room. Then she dropped to her knees beside Damian, panic overtaking her composure. She called his name—his first name—her voice breaking as she searched for a pulse, tears spilling freely. Her fear was raw and immediate, and when she couldn’t feel him breathing properly, she called 911 with shaking hands. Following the dispatcher’s instructions, she began CPR, whispering desperately for him not to leave. Watching her unravel, Damian realized too late that this wasn’t a test—it was real grief, and it cut deeper than anything he’d expected.

When Damian finally opened his eyes, Sophie froze mid-compression, shock flooding her face. She stumbled back, humiliated and shaken, then rushed into the kitchen, struggling to breathe. Damian followed, apologizing again and again. When she demanded to know why he would do such a thing, he admitted the truth: he wanted to know if she was real. Sophie’s reply was quiet but devastating—she was human, she felt fear, and yes, she cared about him.

Her pain went deeper than he knew. Sophie revealed that her father had died when she was fourteen, and she had tried—and failed—to save him with CPR. Seeing Damian on the floor had dragged her back into that trauma. As she spoke, she shared pieces of her life he’d never bothered to ask about: her abandoned dreams of becoming an EMT, her struggles, and how working for him had once made her feel safe and respected. Then she told him she couldn’t work for him anymore.

After Sophie left, Damian found a small notebook she’d hidden away. Inside were quiet entries, including one about a night years earlier when a stranger in a suit bought her food at a hospital while her mother was sick. Sophie had recognized that man when she started working for Damian—it was him. What he’d forgotten had become a cornerstone of her loyalty. The realization crushed him.

Damian apologized without excuses. He freed Sophie from her contract, ensured her independence, and quietly supported her EMT education. A year later, he watched her graduate, changed by the truth he’d nearly destroyed. Love, he learned, wasn’t a test or a trap—it was respect, consistency, and the courage to stop pretending.
