When Joshua bought an old couch at a garage sale, he expected nothing more than a cheap addition to his garage. The seller, Kristen, told him it had belonged to her late mother and that she was selling it to help pay for her daughter’s leukemia treatments. Soon after, a lawyer appeared at his door with a check for $20,000 from an anonymous donor inspired by his act. Then his boss promoted him, saying, “We need leaders with your integrity.”

Weeks later, Joshua received a letter from Kristen. Inside was a photo of her smiling daughter and a note: Because of you, my child gets to have a future. Reading it, he realized the couch had changed more than just his life—it had reminded him of the kind of man he wanted to be.

That night, Joshua sat on the same couch with his fiancée and Wasabi, the dog who’d found the hidden treasure. “I still can’t believe this all started with a couch,” he said. She smiled. “I can. You’ve always done the right thing.”
