I Attended My Husband’s Office Party for the First Time, but I Never Expected to See His Other ‘Wife’ There

I watched as they put Ricky in the squad car. His hands were cuffed, his head hung low. No matter how much I called his name, he wouldn’t look at me. Ricky wasn’t a criminal, just a good kid who’d made mistakes.

The officer told me Ricky would be booked downtown, and hours passed in silence. Then, late that evening, the officer returned. He looked at me, regret in his eyes. “I arrested the wrong kid,” he said, and then added, “I think I know who set him up.”

My heart sank. The officer explained that evidence in Ricky’s backpack was planted. A security camera had captured a kid named Troy Baxter slipping something into it. Troy, once Ricky’s best friend, had fallen in with the wrong crowd.

Troy had framed Ricky to protect himself or someone else. The officer promised to get Ricky out, and by midnight, he called. Ricky was coming home.

When Ricky stepped out of the car, exhausted but relieved, he told me, “I didn’t do anything, Grandma. I swear.” I held him tightly, whispering, “I know, sweetheart.”

Troy confessed and said older kids had forced him to frame Ricky. The case led to bigger arrests. Ricky was back at school, but things had changed. He was more cautious, more thoughtful.

A week later, Officer Daniels, now off-duty, visited. He apologized for arresting Ricky, but I told him, “What matters is what we do after.” We both learned something, and life, as hard as it was, had taught us important lessons.

Ricky’s record was clean, and he was going to be okay.
