All Summer She Prepared Her Roof, and Winter Showed Everyone Why

All summer long and deep into autumn, an elderly woman climbed onto the roof of her small home each day, carefully fixing sharp wooden stakes across its surface. Week by week, the number of stakes grew until the roof looked strange from a distance. Villagers whispered as they passed, convinced grief had overtaken her after her husband’s death. She kept to herself, speaking to no one, and her unusual work only fueled the rumors—until winter finally revealed the truth.

Curiosity soon turned into open speculation. Outside the village shop, neighbors shared theories, each more unusual than the last. Some believed she was protecting herself from imagined dangers, while others dismissed it as pointless labor. Few noticed the patience behind her effort. She chose each piece of wood carefully, sharpening and placing every stake with purpose. When one neighbor finally asked why she worked so hard, she simply said, “This is my protection.”

Then winter arrived with fury. Heavy snow was followed by powerful winds that roared through the village for nights on end. Roofs creaked, fences fell, and by morning, broken boards and scattered shingles covered the streets. Several homes suffered serious damage, their roofs torn apart by the relentless gusts.

Yet in the center of the street, the old woman’s home stood calm and untouched. Not a single plank was missing. The stakes had disrupted the wind’s force, guiding it upward and reducing the pressure on her roof. What had seemed strange now looked like quiet brilliance.

Only then did neighbors learn the truth. The previous winter, a storm had nearly destroyed her home. Before her husband passed, he reminded her of an old method to protect against strong winds. She followed his advice faithfully. From that winter on, the villagers remembered her lesson: foresight may look unusual, but it often proves its worth when it matters most.
