A doctor has warned that one often-overlooked body part is a “breeding ground for bacteria” because most people don’t clean it properly: the navel (belly button). Dirt, sweat, and dead skin can accumulate inside, leading to odors or infections. Experts recommend gentle washing with soap and water during showers to keep it clean and healthy

When it comes to personal hygiene, most people focus on the obvious areas: the face, underarms, hands, and feet, but doctors are increasingly warning that one of the most overlooked—and surprisingly dirty—areas of the human body is right behind the ears. Dermatologists and family physicians report that this small, hidden crease is a hotspot for bacteria, oils, and dead skin cells, yet it is rarely cleaned with the same diligence as other parts of the body. Dr. Roger Kapoor, a dermatologist and senior vice president at Beloit Memorial Hospital, emphasizes that while people meticulously wash their hair, face, and body during showers, the area behind the ears often goes completely ignored. Dirt, sweat, oil, and dead skin naturally accumulate in creases, and the folds behind the ears are no exception. The problem can worsen during the summer months when sunscreen, lotions, or hair products are applied and not fully washed off. Many assume that shampooing the hair will clean this area, but according to Dr. Kapoor, most hair products rinse off too quickly to remove embedded grime. Instead, he advises intentional cleaning using gentle soap, carefully scrubbing the folds where the ear meets the scalp and face, and thoroughly drying afterward to prevent moisture from fostering bacterial growth. Neglecting this area may seem minor, but it can lead to a variety of skin problems, from bacterial infections and irritation to unpleasant odors that can persist even with regular washing.
