My MIL Lived in Our House & Refused

When my mother-in-law, Linda, moved in “for a little while,” I braced myself. She’d always been critical, but I never expected her to treat our home like a hotel. She refused to help around the house, constantly reminded me she was a “guest,” and let me pick up after her like some unpaid maid. Dirty dishes, smeared mirrors, and laundry dumped into my hamper became the new norm. And Jason—my husband—was no help, always siding with, “She’s just trying to get settled.” Things hit a breaking point the day I found Linda sipping my special coffee from my favorite mug—after using the last of it—and leaving a disaster in the kitchen. But instead of blowing up, I smiled… and started plotting. If she wanted to be treated like a guest? Fine. The next morning, she woke up to a menu on her nightstand offering three breakfast choices—cereal, toast, or “Chef’s Surprise.” At night, the Wi-Fi mysteriously shut off at 11 p.m., and laminated “Housekeeping in Progress” signs began appearing wherever I cleaned up after her messes. By midweek, I stopped cooking dinner and left a stack of takeout menus in her room instead. The final touch? An itemized bill on Sunday morning for laundry, cleaning, and “coffee service.”

She stormed into the kitchen, furious, waving the invoice and demanding an explanation. I just smiled and said, “Guests don’t stay for free.”Jason finally caught on. And Linda? She packed up and left within the week, declaring she “didn’t feel welcome.” Mission accomplished. Now the house is clean, peaceful—and my coffee is all mine.
