My Ex-husband Demanded the Tablet He Gifted Our Daughter Back…

Being a single mom wasn’t the hardest part. The hardest part was watching my daughter, Lily, realize—again and again—that her father, Willie, would always choose someone else over her. After twelve years of marriage, Willie walked away, remarried, and left me to raise Lily alone. He barely paid child support and rarely showed up for her. But I never let Lily see my pain. I worked double shifts, saved every penny, and made sure she never felt unloved. Then, one day, Willie called. “Hey, about the tablet I gave Lily for her birthday… I need it back,” he said casually. His new wife thought it was “too expensive” and didn’t feel “comfortable” with Lily having it. The gift he’d promised and that Lily loved—he wanted to take it away just to please someone else. Lily overheard. Her eyes welled with tears, and I knew—this wasn’t just about a tablet. It was about her self-worth. So I agreed to meet him at a café. I brought every receipt I had—medical bills, school expenses, proof of her savings toward that tablet—and dropped them in front of him. “You can have it back,” I said, “once you reimburse Lily for everything she spent on it.” His smirk disappeared. Embarrassed and defeated, he muttered, “Fine. Keep the stupid tablet,” and walked out. Later, Lily asked, “Do you think Dad really loves me?” I pulled her close and said, “Love isn’t just words—it’s actions. And he hasn’t shown up. But that’s his failure, not yours.” She got to keep her tablet. But more importantly, she learned something powerful: No one gets to take away what you’ve earned. And you never have to apologize for standing your ground.
