SCOTUS Declines College Bias Response Team Challenge; Thomas, Alito Dissent

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review a case involving college bias response teams, which are criticized for potentially infringing on students’ First Amendment rights.

The case, brought by Speech First against Indiana University, aimed to address whether students can challenge such teams, which may penalize students for speech deemed biased.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented, highlighting the need for clarity on the issue. Speech First argues that these teams suppress speech through subtle threats of discipline.

The court’s refusal to intervene leaves uncertainty over students’ rights, as similar cases, including one against Virginia Tech, were also dismissed.
