Invasion out of the blue: when my sister’s family moved in without being asked

I never imagined my own family would invade my home, but that’s exactly what happened when my sister Holly and her family showed up unannounced and planned to stay long-term.

Holly and I were close as kids, but things changed after she married Nicholas. They were always on the move, living life to the fullest. One day, I came home to find them unpacking in my living room, claiming our mom gave her my spare key for an emergency. I knew that wasn’t true—this wasn’t the first time they’d overstepped.

When Nicholas said, “Family supports family, right?” I knew I had to take control. I told them to leave, but they refused. I texted an old friend, Alex, for help.

By chance, Alex showed up dressed as a cop for a costume party. Holly and Nicholas were scared by his fake ID and confident attitude. He told them they were trespassing, and they quickly packed up and left.

I felt relieved but guilty. Did I do the right thing? Alex reassured me, saying I couldn’t let them take advantage of me. The lesson? It’s okay to set boundaries with family. My home was mine, and I had the right to protect it. And having a friend like Alex was pretty priceless.
