Our daughter tried to convert our 40th anniversary getaway into her own free vacation by offering to babysit—so I made sure she got a lesson

For our 40th anniversary, my wife and I planned a romantic trip to Maine, but when our daughter Jane found out, she demanded that her family join us. Despite our protests, I reluctantly agreed to change our plans to a family-friendly resort in Florida. However, as the trip approached, Jane’s demands grew—she expected us to babysit the kids while she and her husband, Nick, relaxed.

Realizing this wasn’t our trip anymore, I confronted Jane, but she dismissed my concerns. I decided to switch our tickets back to Maine without telling anyone. The next day, I told Maggie, and we flew out as originally planned.

When Jane found out, she was furious, accusing us of ruining their vacation. But we had the peaceful, romantic getaway we’d dreamed of. Despite the fallout, I stand by my decision. Sometimes, setting boundaries is the best lesson you can teach.
