Firefighter’s funeral postponed as grieving wife goes into labor with their second child

Firefighter Michael Altman, 32, died after suffering critical injuries while battling a fire earlier this month. During the emergency response, he fell through a collapsing floor and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officials confirmed that he had been working to extinguish the blaze when the tragic accident occurred, cutting short the life of a man dedicated to protecting others.

Altman was more than a firefighter—he was part of a legacy. He came from a proud family tradition, becoming the fourth generation to serve in the fire department. Those who knew him described him as brave, selfless, and deeply committed, not only to his duty but also to his loved ones. His loss has left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the wider community.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Altman, and their young son. At the time of his passing, the couple was also expecting their second child, adding another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating situation. Friends and fellow firefighters had been preparing to gather on March 27 to honor his life and service.

However, in an emotional and unexpected turn, the funeral had to be postponed when Nora went into labor shortly before the service. The Chicago Fire Department confirmed the delay, stating simply that “Mrs. Altman is in labor.” In the midst of loss, the arrival of new life stands as a powerful reminder of love, resilience, and the enduring legacy Michael leaves behind.
