The Surprising Gen Z Habit Everyone’s Talking About

When life becomes overwhelming, some adults are turning to pacifiers as a surprising form of stress relief. The trend is booming in China, where young professionals are replacing melatonin, meditation apps, and even cigarettes with adult-sized binkies. On major platforms like Taobao and JD.com, sales have surged, with prices ranging from \$1.40 to \$70.

Sellers promote them as sleep aids, stress relievers, and even tools for quitting smoking. Many report selling thousands of units each month, reflecting growing demand.

Fans say the comfort feels genuine. One user explained that during stressful workdays, the pacifier offers a nostalgic sense of childhood security, easing pressure and anxiety.

Experts, however, warn of risks. Sichuan dentist Dr. Tang Caomin cautions that prolonged use may shift teeth, strain the jaw, and restrict airflow during sleep, creating potential dangers for long-term users.

The fad has already spread to TikTok, where American users showcase pacifiers during commutes, study sessions, and work breaks. Some claim benefits for ADHD or stress management, while others acknowledge a dependence on the habit.

Critics suggest safer alternatives, such as chewing gum or lollipops, which provide oral comfort without the dental or respiratory risks associated with pacifiers.

Psychologists interpret the craze as part of a broader struggle among young adults facing modern pressures. Turning to childlike comforts highlights deep anxieties about responsibility and coping in high-stress environments.

Similar movements, such as “Adulting 101” classes designed to teach basic life skills, point to the same reality: for many, growing up feels daunting. For some, the answer has unexpectedly taken the form of a pacifier, symbolizing both vulnerability and the search for relief.
